I was involved in a mva and have been cut off by mpi even though I have 2
specials that have totally disagreed with mpi,s doctors.I havent had any income
for six months now and will have to sell my house.Mr chomiak has been no help
of course. No fault insurance will ruin your life if you have a serios wva and
get injured.Monoply like mpi should not be legal.Atleast then we make a choice
to get good insurance coverage or cheaper very little coverage such as mpi
gives. GOOD LUCK TO ALL MANITOBAS WHO HAVE TO DEAL WITH M.P.I. |

Sadly I have had a situation very similar to another person that posted
earlier. I have an older truck that I have spent a small fortune fixing up. I
hit a curb and had damage to the suspension in the front. They want to write
it off and give me $1800.00. If I buy it back for $800.00, I am expected to
complete work in 30 days or I cannot register the vehicle again. I will have
to tow it from their compound, do the work and pass a new safety and body
integrity test (all at my cost). Essentially instead of insuring me, they have
given me a bill. I have just under $10,000.00 in the truck. They did not even
want to see the bills that I have for the work done to the vehicle. |

November 16,2007......I was invovled in a mva in Sept. 2003 which has left me
with a permanent disisbility. My dealing with MPI and their no-fault insurance
is a total rip off. Most people will never have to claim for a personal injury
claim so they have no knowledge or interest. They probably think that the
supposedley low rates are a good thing. The reason they are paying a low rate
is because they are getting a low level insurance policy. I was rear ended and
left with two severe fractures to both my ankles. I was off work for three
years, going through nine months of physio therapy. I was in a wheel chair for
nine months progressing to a walker and now walk with the aid of a kane. The
income replacement was a joke. I lived in poverty. I had to cash in $12,000.00
dollars of my RRSP's to subsidize my income. I had to deal with creditors who
showed no concern for my situation. Thanks to my family and friends and their
generosity,I have made it this far. I had to sell my house because I could not
afford the mortgage payment. I was not able to return to my original occupation
because of the amount of walking it required. I now drive a school bus as a
permanent part-time job, twenty hours a week. I did receive a cash settlement
from MPI but all that did was allow me to pay back my creditors. There was
nothing left after that. We pay the premiums for what we think will be adequate
coverage, but only after you are invovled in a personal injury will you find
out differently. MPI is only there to offer high paying jobs and create
employment. My story is much more involved than I can write here. The one
question I have asked my MPI case worker was, the person that hit me probably
got a small fine and maybe a couple of points off ther drivers license and life
goes on. For me my life has been changed forever. How is that fair. Her reply
was, it's not but her hands are tied and that's just the way it is. If i am not
satisfied with a company I am dealing with I have the option of taking my
bissiness elsewhere but when it comes to auto insurance, there is no choice.
Take it or leave it. Appeal the decision, what a joke? I did, but got nowhere
because they keep comung back with, that's the rules. If you want change
approach your government to make change. Yeh right!!! |

great site, congratulations. we need more public education. too many people
and their loved ones are being irreparably harmed by less than transparent and
accountable actions of mpi and their smelly employees. the lame 'doctors' who
work for mpi should have their licenses revoked. some of their in-house legal
counsel are profoundly absent of anything resembling integrity (I have
documentation to support this for those that are interested) there is also a
website www.victimsagainstnofault.org people need to start speaking up and
contacting their (albeit useless) politicians. eventually something will
change once people make their voices heard. |

I have only dealt with Minister Chomiaks' executive assistant who promptly
returns my calls. They have not been very helpful; though I do believe they have
tried (they set-up the meeting for me w/ MPI), they listen to me but seem to
just offer their ear. They seem confused by the circumstances, complexity, and
"ripples" of my file and similar to MPI they cannot or do not offer any
direction I just get passified by their "understanding".
I have since attempted to change careers (which would maintain my income level
and provide opportunity for me manage the pain I endure daily) as recommended by
my Doctor; however I have recently failed the drug test due to the pain killer's
I have been prescribed. Also note if a MVA victim (on the return to work rehab
program)needs to file a claim with EI; it will be brought to your attention that
your are not a F/T employee and your EI benefits will be reduced according to
the hours you have physically worked....If you are not working for a complete 40
work week then your benefits will be short....When the IRI began I had asked the
question about deductions and was informed that MPI would be paying to CPP and
EI on my behalf it was not until I required EI that I found out different. I
feel as though I am a second class citizen and this has now rippled to the
Government of Canada departments as well.....My income for 2007 will be
pathetic. I had a higher income at 19 years old than I did this year....I am an
educated person who cannot use my talents (and experience)for few years yet....I
am not lazy; I am willing to work and feel rewarded when I earn a fair income. I
now have 0.00 income and no experience in my new line of work...and no support
from MPI or EI....Though I have upgraded to better Doctor and understand that my
MPI file is still open, just grossly delayed....I truly wish Good Luck to all
MVA victims you'll need it.... |

I have had my life fall apart after a 100% not my fault nor preventable accident
in 2005...I still have multi-injuries including soft tissue (5) that will
require approx 5-7 yrs to heal if ever...MPI should be charged w/ fraud. They
have 3rd party medical consultants who get paid to distort the reports made by
my Doctors' and force the victim to deal with this. The distortions to reports
and Doctor's notes are so inaccurate it is mind boggling...simple english is
manipulated to MPI's favor and since a medical consultant produced the finding
(for a unknown fee$) they will not question it or the consultant. I have been
sent to a psycologist ($3000.00 bill paid by MPI) who confirmed I am angry...and
suffer chronic pain....I gave that info to MPI for free. During my return to
work rehab program it was discovered that employers do NOT legally have to
participate and then I lost my job (the company I had worked for was owned by a
group of lawyers from another province)...After that it was discovered that the
Doctor (who was reccommended by MPI)who treated me w/ various injections etc had
not only mis-treated me, but also mis-diagnosed me. I had insisted on xrays
after the treatments did not work and the findings confirmed fusion of my
vertebras...I had a meeting w/ MPI adjuster and her supervisor, I brought a
recording device and clearly made it known that I the meeting was recorded. The
comments made by MPI people are staggering, They are indeed just a company and
not focused on the "best interests of Manitobans", and admit the Doctor's will
document info based on who is paying. They also admitted that the employees's of
MPI when injured seek legal counsel (from my same lawyer who ironically would
not attend the meeting I had arranged -which is why I recorded the meeting)...I
had to attain counsel within 6 months of my claim opening as MPI categorized me
as a "temporary-earner" I am single w/ no kids and had the same job for over 10
years...I did take a new job 4 months before the accident. before MPI opened my
injury claim I had to produce my income tax info for the previous 5 yrs from
CCRA and my professional resume this info was complete, and showed my level of
taxation and consistency. Yet they deemed me a temp-earner. The lawyer had this
overturned for only 30% plus gst and pst of the wages MPI ended up
paying....Also note the fact that all MPI income replacements are considered
non-taxable. The ramifications to one's credit rating (even if you are NOT in
debt) are significant....All in all MPI is not structured towards victims nor is
it a non-profit organization (non-profit organization means they have to spend
any potential profit in expenses.....such as MPI wages)...If you are injured the
entire province will be riding "gravy train" on your physical (and possibly
pyscological) expense. Not only does MPI Suck but so do the stupid Manitobans
who are ignorant to the MPI processes, legislature and management policies. When
I called my MP and advised my situation and events that pertain he gave me
Chomiak's number....still nothing has been resolved nor have I been
satisfied....I am hopeful that Chomiaks' office will be able to sort this out???
If not my recording will get to the press and the conservative party which is
where it probably belongs??? what do you think?
I'm glad you shared your story here because that is the whole purpose of this site - to amass and publish as many cases as possible such as yours, where Manitobans can actually see just how MPIC operates. I've seen firsthand, everything you've talked about in your story. I'll bet I could even name the psychologist and the medical consultant of whom you spoke.
The MPIC Act is what allows MPIC to get away with this, and only politicians can change that. I hope that other Manitobans read your story, realize that it is a blueprint for their own fate should they be injured, and inundate Chomiak and Doer with letters of protest. By all means, send your tape to the opposition and to the media. Only bad publicity will give the government the will to fix this travesty.
BTW, could you let us know how Minister Chomiak replies to you? |

the only people who benefit from no fault insurance are the lousy drivers |

I believe we all need to get the message to parliment that no fault does not
work. they should have a revote on this issue with people now knowing the truth
i do not think people would vote the same |

This is the biggest scam of all. You are paying insurance for nothing. I was
hit by a car,but the worst part is getting raped by manitoba public insurance.
they gave me a second rate retraining,i was left with a permanent physical
disability making it impossible for me to work. I am being reduced to a welfare
receipient, being a further burden to the tax payer. this is what we are all
paying for. you pay insurance so you can pay more taxes when they neglect to do
what is right and reduce people to welfare |

A few years back during the winter (with lots of snow), I was involved in an
accident in Winnipeg. With the snow, the roadway was quite narrow, and some
driver coming towards me decided to go between my car and a parked car and
managed to hit both of us. MPIC “investigated” and decided 50/50 blame. I
appealed, arguing that the other driver hit both mine and the parked car (which
was in the original accident report) and they “re-evaluated” 0/100 in my
favor. When I asked the MPIC rep if anyone even bothered to visit the accident
site, she said no, they were too busy. I suppose I should have been happy that
I ultimately won, but I was peeved that MPIC made me go through the trouble of
appealing. Seems they automatically first allot blame 50/50 . Make sure to
appeal if you're in an accident. |

Seriously, stop your whining, get off your $%!#* and get to work. If you have the
drive to build a web site and post your $%!#* on usenet you have the drive to work.
Now quit being a baby and focus on working.
I'm sorry you don't think this website is worthwhile. Its object is to inform Manitobans about the deficiencies of Autopac BEFORE they are involved in an accident so that they don't have to find out the hard way, AFTER the accident. You too, will be adversely affected in the event of an accident, but if you trust MPIC to look after you in that event, then go for it. |

Doug from Winnipeg | July 23, 2007 10:33:46 PM |
Last fall, I received my insurance renewal paperwork to insure my older
vehicle. The insurance rate MPIC (Autopac) charged me was based on their
established value of $6000. This spring, I was involved in an accident, and
Autopac initially decided to write-off this auto. They valued it at $1200 for
write-off purposes, which was the amount they were going to settle for. When I
protested that MPIC themselves had valued it four months earlier at five times
this write-off value when they set the insurance rate, then suddenly when
they're paying, the value drops, MPIC informed me that this was standard
practice. I eventually convinced them that I could get it repaired for less
than write-off, but they would have shafted me had I not questioned this. |
